What is Teak?
Teak is a dense, close-grained hardwood with a high natural oil content.
What makes Teak different from other hardwoods?
The natural oil and mineral content in teak makes it unique and gives it weather-beating properties. Teak is exceptionally hard wearing, highly resistant to rotting and is almost impervious to the effects of sun, rain, frost or snow.
Why use Teak for Outdoor furniture?
Outdoor furniture must endure far harsher conditions than indoor furniture. From sub-zero termperatures in Winter to the sweltering heat and harsh sun of Summer. Teak is best able to cope with these changes in weather conditions, and thanks to its' natural oil content, has a built-in protection against rotting, even in the wettest of environments. Teak is also a relatively light weight timeber in relation to its' strength and unlike many other woods, teak is not at all prone to twisting or splintering.
Just how durable is Teak?
Teak has been widely used in India for more than 2,000 years and examples of teak, still serving in their original location, can be foundin temples and palaces dating more than 1,000 years old. In London, where Teak benches are exceedingly popular, you can easily find Teak park benches that have been in daily use for 80+ years and are still in excellent condition. Even under the harshest conditions, teak is still exceptionally hard-wearing, hence its' extensive use in the ship building industry.
